“I was speaking with Lokee and he’s been digging up old mix tapes that he’s done from a while back and i suggested that maybe we could host his mixes on funkDC… i mean the dude is a DC legend, ya know? and in a lot of ways a part of the crew. he’s been a huge factor in our record knowledge as well, at least for me and Sean.”
info on the mix from Lokee:
“Email I sent out to people: I just dug up another mix. This one was done live at a happy hour I used to do every Thursday at Kaffa House (yes, we were doing a lot of stuff there, as Elias was open to our ideas). The happy hour has some significance within DC’s Hip Hop community because it became the unofficial writers bench in DC, moving from me to Kelt NAA (rip) and then to Eon 2DK and Band MBS. I dj’ed the happy hour for 2 years btwn 96 and 98, and then left, but it lasted all the way up until Kaffa closed in 00.
This particular mix is from early on, right around 96. It’s a mix of hip hop, r&b, with the last song on side a transitioning into reggae. I only had time to transfer side a today, so the mood tends to be mellow. If I have time tommorow, I’ll transfer side b, which picks up in tempo and has a lot more hip hop and funk on it.”
